Ecological
challenges

We discover the strategies that fish use to defend themselves against (or exploit) components of their environment. We have learned how fish make their own sunscreens, and how they fight viral infections.

Organ
maintenance

We study how organs maintain their function in the face of aging and injury. Currently, we are focused on the mechanisms that hearts use to regenerate and how the testis maintains fertility.

Genome
editing

We build tools for manipulating animal cells and genomes, mainly using CRISPR genome editing. We apply these tools in different ways to understand how biological systems work.
